How Dad was named William Frederick:
How Dad was named William Frederick:
The last German emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, full name was ”Frederick William Victor Albert of Prussia.” At that time many believed he unleashed WWI and thus he was despised by most Americans.
When my father (b. 1918) was born, the intent was to name him after his grandfather, Federico Guglielmo (b. 1866). Federico had Americanized his name to Frederick William. The issue was clear : you could not name a child after what might appear to be the most hated man in the world – the German Kaiser. So, it was decided to switch first and middle names to William Frederick.
